Even during the Second World War, the Beetle is there as a all-wheel vehicle. Especially for the desert landscape of North Africa, the car seems better suited with its air-cooling than the hitherto used, larger all-wheel drive vehicles with liquid cooling. The conversion to a switchable front-wheel drive (Fig. 5) is solved relatively easily, yet the transmission is already front of the rear axle.
From its output shaft it goes through the center tunnel forward to an axle drive. There is no center differential because the all-wheel drive is engaged in a special gear via a second gearshift and permits only up to 10 km/h fast ride.
Of course, the effort is higher for use in the desert. In Figures 4 and 5 see mounted the low-pressure desert tyres, size 22 x 67. At the much larger air filter at the rear, one may recognize the intense dust protection. This is applicable to the engine also the electrical system. Thus, e.g. distributor and direct current generator must be specially encapsulated. The fuel system is given a second pump with additional filter. 09/08
